Books About Trauma
The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk M.D.
Samantha’s Review: This book is packed with psychoeducation on the impact of trauma on the body and the brain. It discusses certain studies and helps you understand how your trauma may have impacted you. There are some sections that are a little triggering for trauma and sexual abuse survivors. So, making sure you are skilled in practicing grounding techniques during those sections will be helpful.
It Didn’t Start with You: How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle by Mark Wolynn
Samantha’s Review: This book is very informative and such an interesting read. It goes into detail about how we can inherit trauma from previous generations that might not even be ours and how to get through it. It also includes studies that prove generational trauma is real and provides some examples of that.
Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents by Lindsay C. Gibson, PsyD
Samantha’s Review: I highly recommend this book if you have experienced childhood trauma from abusive or emotionally unavailable parents. It reviews the different types of emotionally immature parents, how it impacts children into adulthood, and how to work through it.
What My Bones Know: A Memoir of Healing from Complex Trauma by Stephanie Foo
Samantha’s Review: This book discusses the author's experience with physical abuse throughout childhood and how it has shaped her life as an adult. She provides some great research on Complex PTSD. She talks about her experience with substance abuse, anger, depression, low self-esteem, and issues with relationships. She was born in Malaysia but grew up in the Bay Area — San Jose, CA. She shares her experiences coming from an immigrant family and being raised in a big city. This book has been triggering for some clients who have experienced physical abuse so make sure you practice grounding techniques and take breaks as needed.
Books About Relationships
Attached: The New Science of Adult Attachment and How It Can Help You Find - and Keep - Love by Amir Levine M.D. and Rachel S.F. Heller M.A.
Samantha’s Review: This book reviews the four attachment styles in relationships and has an assessment included to assess your own attachment style. The book reviews how to become more securely attached in relationships. It helps you gain more self-awareness of how you operate in relationships and how to make positive changes in order to feel more fulfilled in your relationships.

Books About Self-Love
Single. On Purpose. by John Kim
Samantha’s Review: I really enjoyed this book! The author is a licensed therapist who is so real, funny, and open about his personal life. He talks about his relationships, trying to prove himself, experimentation with drug use, and the highs and lows of his healing journey. He discusses how to enjoy being single and discovering yourself. He’s on Instagram under “theangrytherapist.”
A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson
Samantha’s Review: This book is a nice escape from the mundane. It helps shift your mindset to being more open to love and aware of your ego. It reminds you to focus on what’s truly important in life.
Books About Spirituality
The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment by Eckhart Tolle
Samantha’s Review: This was one of the first books I read that completely shifted my mindset. It helped me truly understand what an ego is and helped me dissolve it for a while to live more at peace. It took me a long time to finish reading this book because it has complex ideas and information to digest, but it will definitely leave you mind-blown.
Books About Shifting Your Relationship With Alcohol

Samantha’s Review: This book was a fun and interesting read. It discusses the hard truths about alcohol including how unhealthy it is for you, the history of how it has been marketed towards women, and just how ingrained it is in society.
